Latinos: Key to Growth in Massachusetts

Massachusetts's population continues to grow, despite many people moving away due to the high cost of housing. The reason? Immigration, and largely Latino immigration and its involvement in the communities.

A Demographic Change

According to a joint report by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation and the Mauricio Gastón Institute, for Community Development and Latino Public Policies, and We Are ALX, Latinos accounted for 841% of net population growth in the state.

This increase has been key to offsetting population loss, especially in urban areas like Boston, and has helped Massachusetts maintain its representation in Congress.

Besides, the report shows that between 2023 and 2024 the state experienced its highest level of immigration since 1990, with a large portion of the immigrants coming from Latin America.

Financial Contributions

The research found that Latinos contributed $30 billion to the state's economy between 2014 and 2023. The Latino workforce has also grown and has been key in sectors such as education, health care, and social services.

Furthermore, many Latinos are working in highly skilled sectors, breaking stereotypes and overcoming national trends.

As working-age adults leave the state due to the high cost of living, the growth of the Latino population in Massachusetts has proven vital to sustaining the workforce. Furthermore, many are starting businesses and enrolling in college at record rates, according to the president of We Are ALX.

The Latino community has become a powerful economic engine for the state, also bringing pride and culture to all of New England.
