Chihuahua authorities conducted an operation at a private crematorium in Ciudad Juárez after receiving an anonymous tip. Upon entering the facility, they discovered between 381 and 383 embalmed bodies piled up without proper cremation in several rooms, including the partial remains of at least six people. The prosecutor's office reported that some bodies had been there for three to four years.

The bodies were "irregularly deposited" and piled on the floor—without protocol or monitoring—in a building that supposedly had permits but "did not meet the required cremation capacity." Instead, families received "unidentified material" instead of ashes, sparking complaints and grief among thousands of those affected.

Authorities arrested the crematorium owner and an employee. They are charged with "improper burial of corpses" and possible violations of the General Health Law. The prosecutor's office stated that it will seek "the most severe sanctions" and guarantees a thorough investigation, while efforts are being made to contact the affected families.

This discovery alerted the Mexican government and called into question the Juárez forensic system, allegedly overwhelmed by violence and a lack of personnel and budgetary resources. The discovery has sparked public concern and reopened the debate over oversight of funeral services. Authorities continue their investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibility.
