South African entrepreneur Elon Musk announced his departure from the Donald Trump administration on Wednesday, the 28th. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as a Special Government Employee since the beginning of this year, with the goal of reducing wasteful spending in the federal government.
Musk announced this news in a publication in your account X:
“As my term as Special Government Employee comes to an end, I'd like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time, as it becomes a way of life across the government.”
As a Special Government Employee, Musk was hired under the condition that he would not work more than 130 days in his role at DOGE. Assuming he began his job with Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, his contract should conclude by the end of this week.
The Department of Government Efficiency
Executive Order 14158 On January 20 of this year, the Department of State for the Defense of the Environment (DOGE) was created to identify and eliminate wasteful spending, corruption, and fraud in the U.S. government.
Musk had originally proposed reducing government spending by $2 trillion. However, he was forced to adjust this goal after facing various forms of resistance in Washington, D.C., first lowering his target to $1 trillion and then to $150 billion.
As of May 26, the DOGE reports which has saved the U.S. government $175 billion. They estimate that this figure translates to a savings of $1,086 per person.
Musk and Trump
Elon Musk withdraws from DOGE a day after CBS News published an excerpt from an interview in which the businessman expressed disappointment in President Trump's legislative measures. Musk criticized the administration's most recent legislative project, "The Big and Beautiful Bill Act": a measure that includes tax cuts and stricter immigration controls.
In the interview, Musk said that this legal bill "undermines the work" of DOGE. This criticism led several media outlets to speculate that Musk left his role in the Trump administration due to a clash of personalities. However, Musk has expressed nothing but gratitude and appreciation for the president and their work together.
