A freak accident rocked Boston's Chinatown neighborhood when a truck crashed into a building, striking several pedestrians. The incident, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, left six people injured, including the driver.
What happened?
A yellow Penske rental truck lost control and struck several utility poles before flipping on its side in a busy area of Chinatown. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle, requiring Boston firefighters to rescue him. Four people were taken to hospitals, with one remaining in critical condition as of Tuesday night, authorities said. The driver was also initially listed in critical condition, but his condition has since improved.
The accident occurred in a central, high-traffic area, causing great concern. Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized the shocking effect of witnessing such an incident in a place where people often dine or support local businesses.
An Ongoing Investigation
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said there is no indication so far that the truck crash was unintentional. “It appears to be a tragic accident", he said at a press conference, although authorities are still investigating the causes.
Penske, the company that owned the truck, issued a statement expressing its willingness to cooperate with authorities and its regret for what happened. According to spokesman Randolph Ryerson, the vehicle was rented to a trucking company at the time of the accident.
Authorities will continue to investigate what caused the truck to lose control and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
