An intense sandstorm hit Peru's southern coast on Thursday, driven by winds known as the Paracas winds, which reached speeds of up to 50 km/h. The hardest hit regions were Ica, Pisco, Nazca, Paracas, Tacna, and Arequipa, and the storm also extended as far south as Lima.

Peru's National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (SENAMHI) attributed the phenomenon to the strengthening of the South Pacific Anticyclone, which caused downward winds over desert areas, lifting tons of dust and sand over urban areas. These types of winds, common in Ica, intensified and spread to the rest of the Peruvian coast.

Impact on mobility and services

Traffic was paralyzed for several hours in Ica, Paracas, and Nazca due to near-zero visibility and sand accumulation on streets and highways. Power outages, fallen trees, and damage to light structures and advertising signs were also reported in Lima, Tacna, and Arequipa.

Public health and local responses

Local authorities issued preventive measures: avoiding outdoor activities, securing roofs and windows, and wearing masks and protective eyewear, especially for people with respiratory vulnerabilities. The Ministry of Health and the Emergency Operations Center monitored health centers and implemented rapid responses in urban and tourist areas.

Sandstorm Forecast

SENAMHI reported that the situation will persist until Sunday, August 3, with moderate to strong winds and possible episodes of fog, mist, or drizzle in the mornings. A gradual decrease in adverse conditions is expected as the weekend progresses. The organization also urged citizens to remain alert through official information channels.
