Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Poland has intercepted and shot down Russian drones that invaded its airspace, activating its air defense capability for the first time in direct response to Russian aggression.
What happened
During the early hours of September 10, at least eight Iranian-made Shahed drones, used by Russia, entered Polish airspace from the direction of Belarus. Poland responded with the intervention of combat aircraft, including Polish F-16s and Dutch F-35s, as well as ground-based defense systems such as Patriot radars and batteries. These intercepted the drones that posed a direct threat.
The Kremlin later declined to comment on the incident, referring the matter to the Russian Defense Ministry. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the action a "large-scale provocation" and the most serious threat since World War II, though he clarified that it did not suggest an imminent war.
Military and diplomatic relevance
This is the first known case in which a NATO member has fired defensive shots against Russian drones in the context of the Ukrainian conflict. Poland, recognizing the seriousness of the incident, invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, triggering consultations among member states regarding threats to its territorial security. While this does not entail an automatic military response, it does align allied countries to coordinate a joint response.
Reactions and consequences
The international political and diplomatic elite quickly condemned the violation. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the action "completely reckless" and stressed that the alliance is prepared to defend every inch of its territory.
Meanwhile, the largest Russian night attack against Ukraine left a devastating impact: nearly 415 drones and more than 40 missiles were launched over 15 regions, of which Ukraine managed to intercept around 386 drones and 27 missiles. However, civilian infrastructure was hit, resulting in at least one death and several injuries.
This incident marks a significant escalation in the conflict unfolding east of NATO. The entry of Russian drones into Polish territory transformed an offensive in Ukraine into a regional security crisis, compromising the principle of collective defense under Article 5 and underscoring the vulnerability to cross-border hybrid actions. Although no automatic military response was triggered, it initiated a critical round of coordination among allies, which could alter the balance of forces in Eastern Europe.
