The 2025 Tony Awards winners highlighted the vibrant contributions of Latino artists, bringing diverse stories to the spotlight on Broadway.

Held last Sunday, the ceremony featured productions that showcased Latin talent and narratives, such as Buena Vista Social ClubReal Women Have Curves: The Musical and Hamilton, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

Buena Vista Social Club: A Cuban Musical Sensation

Buena Vista Social Club is a musical inspired by the 1997 Grammy-winning album of the same name.

Set in Havana, the show follows four musicians whose collaboration revived the global influence of Cuban music. Although the dialogue is in English, all songs are performed in Spanish, preserving the authentic sound and cultural narrative of the source material.

The musical was one of the big winners at the 2025 Tony Awards, winning four awards, including Best Orchestration, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography, and a Special Tony for its live band and authentic Cuban arrangements. Additionally, Natalie Venetia Belcon won a Tony for her role as Omara. With 10 nominations, it was one of the most recognized productions of the season.

Real Women Have Curves: The Musical – A Celebration of Identity

Real Women Have Curves: The Musical, an adaptation of the 2002 film and play by Josefina López, received two Tony nominations.

Set in Los Angeles in 1987, the play follows Ana, the daughter of undocumented immigrants, as she navigates familial expectations, cultural identity, and a wave of immigration repression.

The production, which first premiered at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge before moving to New York, marked a milestone for Latino representation. Most of the cast, including lead actress Tatiana Córdoba, made their Broadway debut in the show.

Puerto Rican-American actress Justina Machado was nominated for Best Female Performance. Joy Huerta and Benjamin Vélez's vibrant score, which blends Latin rhythms with Broadway style, was recognized with the award for Best Original Score. Huerta also made history as the first Mexican woman nominated in that category.

Hamilton: A Decade of Revolutionary Storytelling

The reunion for the tenth anniversary of Hamilton It was a deeply meaningful moment for many. Written by Puerto Rican Lin-Manuel Miranda, the play revolutionized theater with its diverse cast and hip-hop-influenced score, winning 11 Tony Awards in 2016. Its legacy continues to inspire new audiences and artists.

To commemorate the anniversary, the original Broadway cast reunited for a medley from the musical, which included a subtle nod to Ariana DeBose, who was part of the original cast in 2015 and is now an Oscar winner. She also hosted the Tony Awards twice.
