Shakespeare on the Common returns to Boston Common with a free and vibrant presentation of “As You Like It”From July 23 to August 10, visitors can enjoy the 29th season of this beloved local theatrical tradition.

Organized by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC), this new edition invites audiences to experience a timeless story of love, identity, and freedom in the heart of urban wilderness.

What to expect from “As You Like It”

Shakespeare on the Common has long been one of the city's favorite free summer events. While the text maintains Shakespeare's poetic style, the performances are presented in a modern, accessible, and entertaining way for today's audiences.

The story follows Rosalind and her cousin Celia as they flee a dangerous political situation. Disguised, they find refuge in the Forest of Arden. With secret identities, mistaken romances, and witty dialogue, the play reflects the classic structure of a romantic comedy, ideal for lovers of contemporary love stories.

Familiar, accessible and free

Performances are held Tuesday through Sunday at 8 p.m., with no performances on Mondays. Admission is completely free and no reservation is required, although reserved seating and seat rentals are available for a nominal fee.

To ensure accessibility for all, the production includes American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, audio-described performances, and accessible seating areas. It's a great opportunity for families and educators to introduce new generations to the world of Shakespeare in an informal, outdoor setting.

Events like Shakespeare on the Common offer a perfect combination of classic theater and summer fun, making them a great way to share with family, friends, or even those experiencing Shakespeare for the first time.

To fully enjoy the experience, it's recommended to bring a blanket or a low chair for comfort, along with snacks or take advantage of the nearby restaurants and food trucks that will be on-site. It's also suggested to bring insect repellent, a light sweater for the evening, and an umbrella if rain is forecast.

Pack a picnic, gather your loved ones, and experience a free art experience. Visit the website CSC for more details and ways to support this initiative.
