Peru has earned a Guinness World Record for preparing the world's largest tarwi salad. The impressive combination of ancient legumes and seasonings reached a weight of 1,425.45 kilos and was officially certified by a Guinness World Records judge at the Plaza de Armas in El Porvenir, Trujillo province.

A feat with the flavor of an Andean superfood

The project was conceived as part of "National Tarwi Day," celebrated every September 3rd. It was organized through a joint effort by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), the San Ignacio de Loyola University (USIL), the Danper company, and with support from the FAO.

The preparation, carried out by more than 500 people—including farmers, chefs, students, and volunteers—paid tribute to the farming families of the Andean region and positioned the tarwi as an “ambassador of Peruvian agriculture.”

Nutritional and cultural relevance

Tarwi, also known as chocho or lupin, is an ancient legume with up to 51% protein, as well as omega-3, calcium, iron, and fiber. It stands out for its adaptability, resistance to extreme conditions, and its role as a crop that improves soil fertility.

In 2024, 22,000 hectares were planted, with a production of 13,000 metric tons and exports of USD 962,000, mostly to Ecuador. More than 30,000 farming families depend directly on tarwi cultivation in regions such as La Libertad, Cusco, Apurímac, and Huánuco.

A symbol of identity and sustainability

Vice Minister Orlando Chirinos emphasized that this record not only demonstrates an achievement, but also a strategy to raise international visibility for the tarwi, based on its ancestral and sustainable value. Raúl Diez Canseco (USIL) and Rosario Bazán (Danper) affirmed that this milestone opens new market opportunities and promotes community pride.

This gastronomic event joins other Peruvian records such as the largest artichoke salad in Trujillo (2019), reinforcing the link between biodiversity, identity, and rural development.
