On September 6, Donald Trump launched Operation Patriot 2.0. Through an official press release from the Department of Homeland Security, it was announced that the operation aims to target the "worst criminal illegal aliens" living in the state of Massachusetts.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said the biggest driver of this operation was the success of the Operation PatriotBack in May, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported capturing nearly 1,500 illegal immigrants in Massachusetts.
Of those arrested during the immigration enforcement operation, more than half had criminal records or serious charges. Consequently, 790 Individuals were charged or convicted of crimes in the United States or abroad. However, immigrant communities raise concerns about due process in Operation Patriot 2.0, sanctuary city policies, and the real impact on families.
Criticism of sanctuary communities and cities
ICE's response to community concerns was that "criminal illegal immigrants are flocking to sanctuary cities like Boston." They added, "[in sanctuary cities] where politicians will allow them to terrorize innocent Americans." To which Michelle Wu defended the city with a statement accusing the Trump administration of "attacking cities to hide the failures of its administration."
In addition, Wu and other city officials have expressed concern about reports of "secret police tactics," including unmarked ICE vehicles seen in immigrant communities. Despite community concerns and protests, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the operation will continue for several weeks.
