Imagine walking across the MIT campus and seeing giant eyes projected onto the iconic dome. “Gaze to the Stars” (“Stargaze”) by Behnaz Farahi of the MIT Media Lab, combines art and technology to capture human experiences in a unique event that lights up the Boston night.
Stories that Resonate
In this project, visitors enter an open-air capsule where fog envelops the ground. Upon placing their foreheads on a white sphere, they are greeted by a starry sky and a welcoming AI voice: a warm guide representing the 109 years of MIT leadership. This voice invites participants to listen to anonymous stories and share their own.
From marriage proposals to confessions of academic struggle, “Stargaze” brings together diverse voices.
For example, research assistant Krystal Jiang shared that she felt “tired, but in a positive way” due to her efforts. The AI processes these responses and converts them into iris images projected onto the dome, which passersby can scan to learn the stories.
The Art of Behnaz Farahi
Behnaz Farahi, an Iranian architect, explores the intersection of technology, emotion, and society. With "Glance at the Stars," she compiled 200 stories ranging from dreams to disappointments. "It's important to show both the successes and the struggles," she stated, highlighting the importance of reflecting human complexity in this work, presented at MIT's Artfinity festival.
Alix Aubert, a visiting student, described the experience as “beautiful but intimidating.” For her, recording the eyes while reflecting on deep emotions captures something essential: “They say the eyes reflect what we feel,” she commented, highlighting the magic of the project.
Connection Through the Eyes
Farahi doesn't just seek to provoke, but to connect. "Stargaze" demonstrates that, despite our differences, we share similar dreams and challenges. With plans to create portable versions, he hopes to take this experience beyond Boston, expanding its global impact.
"Stargaze" transforms MIT into a space where technology gives voice to the heart. What story would you share?
