The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission has officially launched a public call for proposals to redesign the state's official emblems, inviting residents to contribute creative ideas that reflect the Commonwealth's diverse identity and values.

This initiative seeks to replace current symbols—criticized for their outdated and controversial imagery—with designs that resonate with contemporary Massachusetts. Proposals must be submitted by June 18, 2025, and the commission will select three finalists per category in July.

Honoring Massachusetts' Heritage and Progress

The redesign effort emphasizes inclusivity and creativity, aiming to move away from the seal's current image, which depicts a Native American figure with one arm holding a sword. Instead, the commission encourages the use of natural symbols native to Massachusetts, such as the North Atlantic right whale, the eastern white pine, the elm, and the cranberry.

The inclusion of coastal elements and the state's geographic silhouette is also suggested to highlight its maritime history. The goal is to create a seal, flag, and motto that embody the state's commitment to unity and progress.

A Community-Driven Process

Led by Secretary of Education Dr. Patrick Tutwiler and Kate Fox, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of Tourism and Travel, the advisory commission is committed to a transparent and inclusive process.

After the finalist proposals are selected, public hearings will be held across the state to gather feedback on the designs. This approach ensures that the new seal, flag, and motto reflect the voices of all communities, from urban centers to rural areas.

Final recommendations will be submitted to Governor Maura Healey by July 29, 2025.

How to Participate

Whether you're an artist, historian, student, or simply a proud resident, your vision can become part of the state's legacy. Submissions can include written ideas, visual sketches, or complete design concepts.

To participate, visit the Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission website for submission guidelines and submit your proposal by June 18, 2025.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the Commonwealth's evolving identity. Share your ideas and help create a seal, flag, and motto that truly represent the heart of Massachusetts.
