On Saturday, April 5, thousands of people across the United States participated in the demonstrations “Hands Off!" to express their rejection of the policies of the Donald Trump administration. Protests took place in all 50 states, rain or shine, with signs addressing issues ranging from the economy to public services and civil rights.

A National Mobilization

More than 1,200 events were organized by more than 150 groups, including unions, civil rights advocates, and veterans' groups. Rallies took place at key locations such as the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. Protesters spoke out against policies such as the closure of Social Security offices, cuts to the healthcare system, strict immigration measures, and the reduction of protections for marginalized communities.

Boston Makes Its Presence

In Boston, between 25,000 and 30,000 people marched from Boston Common to City Hall Plaza, according to local police. Families with children, students, union members, veterans—and even some pets—gathered in the rain to protest together.

Senator Edward J. Markey and the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, joined the demonstration. Markey urged the crowd to resist Trump's policies in the courts and at the ballot box, while Wu emphasized building a dignified future for future generations. Boston Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys also participated, performing a concert in City Hall Plaza, featuring songs like "Worker's Song," which they dedicated to laid-off federal employees.

White House Response

The White House stated that Trump is committed to protecting programs like Medicare and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries, and that these programs are at risk if they are expanded to undocumented immigrants.

The “Hands Off!” movement has become the largest protest effort since Trump returned to power in January 2025. White House officials reported that Trump spent Sunday playing golf at his Mar-a-Lago club.
