The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced updates to the Oscars voting process and how filmmakers should approach the use of technology and eligibility criteria. These changes aim to improve fairness and transparency at the awards ceremony.

Voters Must See All Nominated Films

The most notable requirement is that Academy members must view all nominated films in each category before casting their votes in the final round.

Previously, voters were only encouraged to watch the nominated films, relying on an honor system before voting. This change seeks to address concerns about voters skipping films, which has influenced past results and led to what many consider unfair omissions.

The organization will track viewings through its private online screening room, and members will be required to submit a form if they view films at festivals or private events.

Updates for the Use of AI

During this year's Oscars, there was much discussion about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in film, following its use in The Brutalist, where AI was used to enhance the Hungarian accents of actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. Brody won the Best Actor award for his role in the film.

The Academy's new stance is that generative AI and digital tools will neither enhance nor hinder a film's chances of being nominated. Instead, the focus remains on human creativity as the core of cinematic art.

A New Category for Casting Directors

Casting, a beautifully critical function, is what shapes a film and its impact. Casting directors will finally receive recognition with their own category at the 2026 Oscars.

For the new Best Ensemble Cast category, they must submit written descriptions of their casting process and provide a photo grid or full cast list.

The Oscars are scheduled for March 15, 2026, and will again be hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien.
