Netflix gave the green light to the production of Kennedy, a drama series centered on the celebrated American political family. The project, developed with Chernin Entertainment, will star actor Michael Fassbender, who will play the patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr., Variety reported.

Based on the book by Fredrik Logevall

The series is inspired by JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956 (2020), by historian Fredrik Logevall, and will explore the origins, ambitions and conflicts of one of the most influential families in the United States.

The first season will feature eight episodes set in the 1930s. It will chronicle the rise of Joe and Rose Kennedy and the formation of a dynasty marked by power and tragedy, with a special focus on the young Jack Kennedy, the future president.

A drama in the style The Crown

According to Variety, Kennedy will show “the intimate lives, loves, rivalries and tragedies that forged the most emblematic dynasty in modern history.”

The project, in development for two years, has been described as an American version of The CrownFilming is set to begin in mid-2026, with locations in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles.

The choice of Fassbender, nominated for an Oscar for Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, marks his return to television after a decade dedicated to cinema.

With Kennedy, Netflix is betting on a historical drama that combines power, legacy, and family tragedy, promising to become its next big period hit.

In addition to its narrative ambition, Kennedy promises to stand out for its thoughtful historical setting and exploration of the moral dilemmas underlying power. The production will include recreations of the years leading up to World War II, when Joseph Kennedy Sr. was ambassador to the United Kingdom and a controversial figure for his political stance.
