Netflix announced its new documentary series about Juan Gabriel, titled "Juan Gabriel: Debo, puedo y quiero," which will premiere on October 30, 2025, with a four-part structure that delves into the artist's life beyond his public role.

The production, directed by documentary filmmaker María José Cuevas and produced by Ivonne Gutiérrez and Laura Woldenberg, is characterized by its intimate approach. It draws on extensive personal archives, including home recordings made by Juan Gabriel from the 1970s until shortly before his death.

The nature of the material—personal videos, photos, and testimonials from family, collaborators, and friends—allows us to reveal the man behind the legend, revealing previously unseen aspects of his emotional and creative life and his immediate surroundings.

Netflix argued that it's not a dramatized fiction. That means there are no actors or cast members, because it's based on:

Juan Gabriel's own personal archives: home recordings, concert videos, photographs and diaries.

It contains testimonies from family members, friends, and close collaborators, who provide context and memories about his life. It also features current interviews filmed by the production team, which serve as a guiding thread.

The "shooting" focuses more on the work of compilation and editing: rescuing, digitizing, and organizing this personal archive to transform it into a coherent audiovisual narrative. The film is directed by María José Cuevas, renowned for her sensitive and intimate documentary style.

In announcing the project, Cuevas emphasized that using this archive was key to understanding the singer-songwriter's close relationships and constructing a more human narrative, "by moving away from the myth."

This documentary offers a fresh take for contemporary audiences, exploring Alberto Aguilera Valadez's personal triumphs and challenges, from his humble beginnings in Ciudad Juárez to his rise to global icon.
