England were crowned champions of the Women's Euro 2025 for the second consecutive time after defeating Spain in a penalty shootout. The match was watched by more than 12 million viewers in the United Kingdom, breaking records as the most-watched and best-attended final in the tournament's history.

An Exciting Final in Basel

This year's edition set a new record for goals in a tournament of this category, with a total of 104, surpassing the 95 recorded in 2022. Furthermore, for the first time in the tournament's history, both semifinals went into extra time.

The final pitted defending champions England against a Spain side seeking their first European title. The match ended 1–1 after 90 minutes of regulation time and extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Despite Spain's dominance in possession, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton's key saves on shots from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmatí secured victory for the Lionesses.

Chloe Kelly, who had already scored the decisive goal in the Euro 2022 final, shone again by converting the penalty that gave England a 3–1 shootout victory.

With this victory, Sarina Wiegman, who also led the Netherlands to the title in 2017, secured her third European Championship as a coach, cementing her position as one of the most successful coaches in the history of women's football.

Unprecedented Audience Success

UEFA Women's Euro 2025 has been recognized as the most-watched edition of the tournament. In the UK alone, the final reached a peak of 12.2 million viewers across BBC platforms, making it the most-watched television moment of 2025. Globally, Fox Sports reported a 90% increase in viewership 1PT3T compared to 2022, with an average of 306,000 viewers for the group stage and a cumulative live audience of over 400 million.

Matches like France's 2-1 victory over England and Spain's 3-1 win over Italy saw significant peak viewership in the United States, with 690,000 and 568,000 viewers respectively.

The tournament also broke attendance records, with 29 of the 31 matches sold out and a total of 623,088 fans in attendance before the final. The knockout stage alone attracted more than 112,000 spectators. Fan zones in host cities welcomed more than one million visitors, and more than 35% of the tickets were purchased by international fans of over 160 nationalities.

A Legacy for Women's Football

England's victory was celebrated with an official reception at Downing Street and an open-top bus parade through the streets of London. Euro 2025 has set a new standard for women's football. As the world turns its attention to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, the tournament's achievements in viewership, attendance, and digital engagement promise an even brighter era for the sport.
