California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he will sue the Trump administration today over the deployment of the National Guard during this weekend's protests in Los Angeles. Newsom called the president's decision to deploy the National Guard "illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional."

This legal battle comes after three days of protests that have paralyzed much of Los Angeles. The protesters are criticizing recent operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has stepped up its arrests in California in recent weeks.

Protests in California

Protests against ICE operations in Los Angeles began on Friday, June 6, in response to the increased presence of the federal agency and its agents in the city. In just last week, ICE detained more than 100 immigrants in different sectors of Los Angeles.

The following day, another protest erupted in Paramount, a city south of Los Angeles. During this demonstration, several protesters raised Mexican flags while clashing with federal authorities and members of the state police. That evening, another protest gathered in Downtown Los Angeles, attracting around 60 people.

The National Guard

As a result of these demonstrations, Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops on Saturday. Governor Newsom described the decision as “intentionally inflammatory” in a statement on his Twitter account. X.

The United States National Guard generally obeys the Governor of the state that invokes it. However, President Trump applied his authority Title 10 to assume federal command of the troops, surpassing Newsom in the chain of command.

Over the weekend, approximately 300 National Guard troops arrived in various parts of Los Angeles. The troops supported federal agents in protests that continued through Sunday the 8th.

Several prominent political figures have criticized the deployment of the National Guard. Kamala Harris, the former vice president of the United States, responded to this situation with a statement in your account X:

“The deployment of the National Guard is a [dangerous development] intended to cause chaos.”

Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations did not stop with the intervention of the National Guard. On the contrary, several media outlets report that the presence of soldiers has increased tension between protesters and federal forces.

The world is watching anxiously as California and Trump continue to define the role of the National Guard in the security of the country and its citizens.
