Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has unveiled a new humanitarian maritime mission, called the Global Sumud Flotilla, which will set sail from Spain on August 31, 2025, with dozens of ships in a coordinated attempt to "break the illegal Israeli siege" on Gaza.

The initiative, in collaboration with organizations such as the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, Sumud Nusantara and Sumud Maghreb Flotilla, and the support of personalities such as Susan Sarandon, Gustaf Skarsgård and Liam Cunningham, brings together activists from 44 countries in one of the largest international mobilizations in support of the Palestinian people.

What is expected from this new fleet?

In addition to the departure from Spain, more vessels are expected to arrive on September 4 from Tunisia and other Mediterranean ports, while simultaneous demonstrations are taking place around the world demanding the opening of a humanitarian corridor and an end to the blockade.

This new flotilla is the second such initiative in which Thunberg has participated. The previous attempt, launched in June aboard the Madleen boat, was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, resulting in her deportation along with other activists. The incident drew international criticism for alleged violations of humanitarian law.

The fact became known because Thunberg went viral. in X announcing that Israeli forces had hijacked the ship.

Subsequently, all those on board were deported to their countries of origin and banned from entering Israel for ten years.

“A media stunt, not a humanitarian mission”

Following the release of the video, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued several statements. where he rejected the accusations and offered his version of events. The diplomatic ministry described the operation as a "media provocation" aimed at gaining visibility, rather than providing substantial aid.

"The yacht claims to be delivering humanitarian aid. In reality, it's a media stunt to gain publicity and includes less than the load of a single truck. 'selfie yacht', the ministry stated. It emphasized that the maritime area off the coast of Gaza is under a legal naval blockade, in accordance with international law, and that all unauthorized vessels are intercepted.

Thunberg has shown that she has no intention of giving up on her activist goals, whether it's continuing the fight for the environment or raising awareness about the crisis in the Gaza Strip. She continues to inspire millions of young people around the world, who see the potential to make a positive difference through her.
