Massachusetts residents are receiving some good news amid high energy costs. Governor Maura Healey has implemented measures to ease the financial burden on citizens, announcing a discount on energy bills that will benefit most electricity customers in the state. This effort seeks to reduce the costs faced by families, especially at a time when rates have reached alarming levels.
Starting in April, users of companies like Eversource, National Grid and Unitil will see a credit of $50 reflected on their electricity bills. This initiative, which has a cost of more than $125 million, will be financed through a fund designated for clean energy development, according to the governor's office. Healey emphasized that, although it is not a significant sum for everyone, every dollar counts and can make a difference for many families.
The governor expressed her commitment to residents, stating that she has pressured utility companies to help reduce costs. “Everyone must do their part, and I have been firm with the energy companies during this time,” Healey said in an announcement.
More Measures to Reduce Costs
In addition to discounting energy bills, the Massachusetts government plans to introduce other strategies to lower costs in the long term. Hydroelectric power will be introduced in Massachusetts this year, which promises to further lower rates. Healey also announced that the state will be a pioneer in offering targeted discounts for the middle class, a measure that could save residents up to $1.4 billion over the next five years.
Another key action will be a review of additional charges on bills. The administration plans to require companies to eliminate any non-essential extra costs, providing additional relief to consumers struggling to keep up with payments.
Response to a Growing Problem
Rising energy bills have been a critical issue in Massachusetts in recent months. Some residents have reported increases of more than $1.4T3 billion compared to last year, forcing many families to make difficult decisions, such as cutting back on food to cover these costs. Faced with this situation, Healey urged the Department of Public Service to reconsider the rate increases approved last November, achieving a $1.4T5 billion reduction in the budget for MassSave, a program funded by customers through an energy efficiency charge.
Healey estimates that her comprehensive energy strategy will save residents approximately $1.4T6 billion over the next five years. Meanwhile, Eversource and National Grid customers will also enjoy a $10.1T3T reduction on their gas bills during March and April, a measure implemented since February. The governor plans to unveil her full energy bill in the coming weeks, consolidating these initiatives.
