In a key meeting in Jerusalem, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consolidate U.S. support for the ceasefire between Hamas and Gaza and to define the next step: disarming the militant group and rebuilding the Strip as part of a broader regional stabilization plan.

Imposing the disarmament of Hamas as a cornerstone

During the dialogue, Vance stressed that "we have a very, very difficult task ahead of us, which is to disarm Hamas, but to rebuild Gaza so that the lives of its people improve, and to ensure that Hamas is no longer a threat to our friends in Israel."The US government increased pressure on Hamas, warning that failure to cooperate could lead to harsher measures, including the use of force. Furthermore, the creation of an international security force, with the participation of allied countries, was proposed to oversee the post-conflict phase in Gaza, without the direct deployment of US troops there.

Reconstruction of Gaza and new security architecture

The second major pillar of the agreement is the reconstruction of Gaza under a new architecture: an internationally supervised Israeli-controlled zone is envisaged, where the rehabilitation of key infrastructure will be promoted, while Hamas would be excluded from armed control. Under the terms discussed, humanitarian aid, reconstruction funds, and the reopening of services will be conditioned on progress in the demilitarization of Hamas and compliance with the ceasefire. Furthermore, the relationship between Israel and the US was reaffirmed as an alliance, not a hierarchy, by both sides.

This agreement marks a turning point because it unites, at least on paper, three simultaneous objectives: a more stable ceasefire, the disarmament of Hamas as an active military and political player, and the transformation of Gaza into an economically revitalized and politically reorganized region. It remains to be seen how it will be implemented on the ground, given that the conflict has left profound devastation and numerous questions about governance, financing, and Palestinian participation.
