A Florida prosecutor has publicly called for people to report ex-partners who are in the United States illegally to facilitate their deportation. The initiative was announced on the social media platform X, where the prosecutor shared a real-life account: an ex-partner with a history of abuse and an expired visa who now faces immigration proceedings after being reported.
The message didn't stop at a specific example. Uthmeier expanded the appeal, inviting anyone in a similar situation to contact his office:
“If your ex is in this country illegally, please… we'll be happy to help.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) supported the campaign by promoting the ICE hotline, which receives about 15,000 calls per month.
Criticism of the Prosecutor
Uthmeier's initiative is part of an aggressive strategy to strengthen immigration enforcement in Florida, aligned with the anti-immigrant approach of Governor Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump. Florida has led the nation in migrant detentions and recently opened the controversial "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center in the Everglades.
However, the invitation to report ex-partners has been harshly criticized as a campaign that can encourage interpersonal snitching and strain personal relationships. Some experts describe the measure as "cruel" and "performative," while jokes have emerged on social media, such as requests to deport hateful mothers-in-law.
