The National Hockey League (NHL) continues to advance inclusion by broadcasting the 2025 Stanley Cup Final in American Sign Language (ASL). This initiative, in collaboration with PXP, offers a unique experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing fans, allowing them to enjoy every game with real-time ASL commentary and narration. The games will be available to stream on HBO Max in the United States and Sportsnet+ in Canada.
A Milestone in Sports Accessibility
Since its debut in 2024, the "NHL in ASL" broadcast has set a precedent as the first of its kind in major professional sports leagues. This year, coverage expands with live player interviews from Rogers Place and Amerant Bank Arena, homes of the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, respectively.
The broadcast will feature deaf commentators Jason Altmann, Noah Blankenship, and remote correspondent David McGregor, who will provide detailed visual descriptions of plays, refereeing decisions, and rules explanations.
Additionally, immersive elements are incorporated, such as a bar that displays real-time crowd noise levels and custom visual emoticons to represent key moments such as goals, penalties, and collisions.
Who will play in the 2025 Stanley Cup Final?
The 2025 Stanley Cup Final features a rematch between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers. In 2024, the Panthers secured victory in Game 7, and now they're looking to repeat as champions.
If you follow the Bruins, you'll see a familiar face. The former Bruins captain was unexpectedly traded to the Panthers at the end of the regular season in exchange for a conditional 2027 second-round draft pick, which became a first-round pick for 2027 or 2028 when Florida won two rounds in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs.
A proven Stanley Cup champion with Boston in 2011, Marchand brings drive, leadership, and postseason experience to the Panthers' roster. Now, all eyes are on whether Marchand and the Panthers can lift the trophy once again.
The 2025 Stanley Cup Final kicks off Wednesday, June 4 at 8 p.m. EST.
