The death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. The leader of the Catholic Church since 2013, died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, where he had resided since the beginning of his pontificate. His passing marks the end of an era of reform and outreach to those most in need.

At 9:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced with profound sorrow the death of Pope Francis from the chapel of Casa Santa Marta. In his message, he highlighted the Pope's dedication to the Church and his example of universal love, especially toward the poorest and most marginalized.

The Pope and his long battle with respiratory problems 

The health of Pope Francis was a constant concern in his later yearsIn February 2025, he was admitted to the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital due to severe bronchitis. Days later, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, complicating his condition. Although he was discharged after 38 days of hospitalization, his condition never fully stabilized. 

Since his youth, Pope Francis had struggled with respiratory illnesses; in 1957, he had part of his lung removed due to a severe infection. In November 2023, he canceled a trip to the United Arab Emirates due to influenza accompanied by lung inflammation. 

Pope Francis and preparations for a simple funeral 

In April 2024, Pope Francis approved a revised version of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, the liturgical manual that regulates papal funerals. This new edition reflects his desire to maintain an austere ceremony focused on faith rather than pomp. 

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the Pope requested that his funeral services focus on "the Christian hope of the resurrection." His body was immediately transferred to the chapel after his death, following the protocol he himself established. 

The spiritual and social legacy of Pope Francis 

Pope Francis will be remembered for his approachable pastoral style, his defense of human rights and his constant call for social justice. Since his election in 2013, promoted reforms Within the Roman Curia, he promoted interreligious dialogue and positioned himself as a global voice for the poor and marginalized. 

His humble approach contrasted with earlier figures, and his residence in the Santa Marta House, instead of the Apostolic Palace, symbolized his vision of a simpler and more accessible Church.
