Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran revealed that his struggles during the 2021 and 2022 seasons led him to attempt suicide. This confession was shared in the upcoming Netflix docuseries. “The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox“, which was released on Tuesday.
A Journey from the Darkness
Duran explained that the negative comments from outside resonated with the harsh self-criticism he already felt. At one critical moment, he found himself alone in his room, about to pull the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. For him, that failure was a divine sign and marked a change: he began to reflect on his purpose and focus on his mental well-being so he could live and play on his own.
In his first seasons with the Red Sox, he performed modestly, hitting .215 in 2021 and .221 in 2022. His career took a turn in 2023, when, after being called up from Triple-A, he hit .295 and stole 24 bases. Last season, Duran was suspended for two games after making an offensive remark to a fan, an incident for which he has since apologized. He was then selected for the first time in the All-Star Game and named MVP of the same, setting personal records with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs.

Following the publication of Duran's story, the Massachusetts-based suicide prevention organization, Samaritans, reported that its peer-to-peer messaging line for young adults received three times as many messages as usual. As Duran continues his work as a mental health advocate, he plans to launch a foundation to further support this cause. His story has reignited the public conversation about mental health, especially in the demanding world of sports.
