U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) has ordered the deployment of approximately 700 Marine Corps personnel to the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The soldiers are from 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division, and will join Task Force 51, a joint unit already operating in the region to protect federal installations and personnel.
This infantry group, which has been on alert since the weekend, will be integrated operationally. with the active forces under Title 10 of the U.S. Code, This allows the use of federally controlled military personnel within the country. The measure seeks to strengthen the security of strategic areas in collaboration with civilian agencies.
Task Force 51 currently has approximately 2,800 personnel, including 2,100 federally assigned National Guard soldiers and newly incorporated Marines. All have been trained in crowd control, de-escalation, and moderate use of force protocols, with the goal of responding professionally to protests or riots.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that he will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration for what he calls an "illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional deployment" of the National Guard in Los Angeles. Newsom accused the former president of exceeding his authority by federalizing troops, ignoring the governor's role as commander-in-chief of the state's National Guard.
The legal dispute arose after three days of intense protests in different areas of Los Angeles, motivated by operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency has intensified its arrests in recent weeks, arresting more than 100 people in the previous week alone.
Raids in Los Angeles
The demonstrations began on Friday, June 6, as a direct response to the growing ICE presence in the city. The following day, the protest moved to Paramount, a city south of Los Angeles, where demonstrators carried Mexican flags and clashed with local and federal authorities. Another rally was held in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night, with nearly 60 participants.
Various reports indicate that the protests continue, now fueled by opposition to the military presence in the streets.
Meanwhile, the Marines' deployment strengthens the response capabilities of Task Force 51, which remains under the command of Major General Scott M. Sherman. This unit is prepared to respond quickly in emergency situations, working in coordination with the Department of Defense and civilian authorities.
