Yesterday, the weather in Boston reached 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 °C), setting a new record for the hottest June day in the city's history. At the height of a heat wave that led the City of Boston to declare a climate emergency, the previous record of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 °C) was surpassed.

Since Saturday, Mayor Michelle Wu has held a state of emergency due to a heat wave, which culminated in its hottest day ever yesterday. Although the heat wave remains in Boston, the city no longer considers it an emergency. In his original statement announcing the state of emergency, Emergency Preparedness Director Adrian Jordan shared the following message:

“Extreme heat can pose significant risks to people's health. It's important that we all take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our neighbors.”

City Records and How to Manage the Weather in Boston

The hottest day in Boston occurred in 1911, when the city reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C) on July 4. Boston has reached temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit 27 times in the past; the last time the city got this far was in 2021.

Since the beginning of the heat wave on Saturday 21st, several meteorologists warned of the possibility Boston will surpass its June record. Although today will be less hot than yesterday, the National Meteorological Service warns that temperatures in Boston will still be around 90 degrees Fahrenheit (33°C).

Boston City Hall has taken the initiative to offer several different resources to help city residents find shelter from the heat. This list of resources: here.

If you have any questions about how these services work, or any other non-emergency issues, Boston residents are encouraged to call the number 311. If you have an emergency, do not hesitate to contact the emergency services with 911.
