This Thursday, the House of Representatives finally approved Trump's controversial bill, known as “One Big Beautiful Bill” or “Big Beautiful Bill” by 218 votes in favor and 214 against. It includes permanent tax cuts of $1.4 trillion, tax breaks, and increases in defense and immigration. The president is expected to sign it this month. July 4th at 5 pm ET.
The vote was extremely close: only two Republicans—Massie and Fitzpatrick—broke the caucus, joining the Democrats in opposition. Trump and the Republican leadership worked all night to persuade the skeptics.
Contents of Trump's project
The law, of almost 900 pages, includes:
- Permanent extension of the 2017 tax cuts.
- New deductions: tips, overtime, seniors.
- $350 billion for defense and immigration (including deportations and wall construction).
- Cut more than $1 trillion to Medicaid and food assistance programs, with new work requirements.
- Elimination of clean energy credits.
- Additional funding: funds for rural hospitals, space exploration, children's savings accounts.
- The deficit would increase between $3.2–3.4 billion in the next decade, according to the CBO.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R) welcomed the progress, saying it will make the country “stronger, safer and more prosperous.”
Hakeem Jeffries (D) responded in a speech of 8 h 44 min, calling it a “crime scene” that attacks the “health, safety and well-being” of Americans.
Political meaning
The passage of this bill before July 4th is a major achievement for Trump's comeback and the Republican agenda, and will serve as a banner for the reelection campaign. However, the Democratic opposition is warning about its effects on the deficit and cuts to social programs.
