Boston Celtics plan trades as Tatum recovers
With Jayson Tatum out with an Achilles tendon injury, the Celtics are considering restructuring nearly their entire roster.
The Boston franchise is listening to offers for nearly its entire roster, including Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, while Tatum remains out with a serious injury.
The Boston Celtics are preparing a major roster overhaul for the upcoming 2025/26 season. With the intention of reducing their high salary bill, valued at $223 million, and with its main star, Jayson Tatum, sidelined due to a serious injury, the team is open to important transfers.
According to the journalist Shams Charania in an interview with Pat McAfee, The Celtics plan to negotiate the contracts of Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Sam Hauser, and they also haven't ruled out listening to offers for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Only Tatum is considered "untouchable" in these moves.
“Everyone but Tatum?” McAfee asked.
“That’s basically it,” Shams replied.
According to the sports reporter, the team's new management is looking to lighten the salary cap and redefine its core of players, prioritizing financial flexibility while Tatum completes his rehabilitation.
Jayson Tatum: Out with Achilles injury
The Celtics' star forward suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on May 12, 2025. The injury occurred when Tatum attempted to recover a loose ball, felt a pop in his foot, and fell unable to put weight on his leg. He underwent surgery the following day, on May 13.
The injury would have a recovery of at least 9 to 12 months, which would keep him out of the 2025–26 season almost entirely. In a recent update, Tatum shared on social media: “Day 25… days starting to get a little easier,” showing signs of progress, although still without a concrete return date.
Contracts Boston wants to move
- Jrue Holiday: : 2 years guaranteed for $67 million, with a $37.2 million player option for 2027–28.
- Kristaps Porzingis: $30 million contract expiring.
- Sam Hauser: 4 years guaranteed for $45 million.
The strategy aims to find a market for these players in search of salary cap space and to redefine the sports project around a fully recovered Tatum by 2026.
