The Boston Celtics have officially renewed their commitment to head coach Joe Mazzulla, signing a multi-year contract extension whose length and financial terms were not disclosed. The announcement comes weeks after the franchise won its long-awaited 18th NBA title under his leadership.

Mazzulla, 37, called the renewal “a blessing” and thanked his family, the coaching staff, and, especially, the players he has coached during his three years at the helm. “I’m grateful for the players I’ve been able to coach. I look forward to continuing to compete for the Celtics and the city of Boston,” he said in a statement released by the team.

A sustained commitment to stability

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens made it clear from the start of the offseason that he intended to keep Mazzulla on the bench long-term. With the confirmed renewal, the organization is backing a coach who has not only delivered athletic results but has also demonstrated a deep connection with the team's identity.

“Joe is a talented leader, committed to learning and constant improvement. He has a passion for the Celtics rivaled only by that of our most loyal fans,” Stevens said. “He has accomplished extraordinary things: averaging more than 60 wins per season and winning a championship in just his third year as head coach.”

Mazulla: A meteoric rise!

Mazzulla joined the Celtics in 2019 as an assistant coach. In 2022, he was named interim head coach following Ime Udoka's suspension, and was given the permanent position in February 2023. Since then, he has led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances, surpassing 57 wins in each campaign and surpassing the 60-win mark in the last two.

His breakthrough came in the 2023-2024 season, when he led the Celtics to the NBA championship, becoming the youngest coach to lift the Larry O'Brien Trophy since Bill Russell in 1969.

The future in Boston

With this extension, the Celtics strengthen the stability of their sporting project with Mazzulla at the helm. Although the team has not disclosed the contract details, this is at least the second extension the coach has received since officially taking over.

Boston's contract renewal reflects its support for young leadership and the consistency of its coach, while maintaining a long-term vision following its historic campaign.
