The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization has confronted singer Benito “Bad Bunny” Martínez Ocasio over his use of live animals as part of his residency at the Puerto Rico Coliseum. In a post on social media yesterday, PETA’s Hispanic branch, PETA Latino, published: the following message attached to a video of one of Bad Bunny's performances:
In the video accompanying this message, several caged chickens can be seen surrounding the stage while Benito sings. PETA published several different angles of the performance and edited the videos with the following messages:
“Surrounded by screams, bright lights, music, and intense vibrations, trapped in an environment they don't understand. // This is cruel and stressful for the chickens. The animals are not props.”
Bad Bunny vs. PETA: It's not the first time
This is the second recent conflict between the Puerto Rican singer and the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Last year, Benito made his entrance to a performance of his "Most Wanted Tour" on horseback. The action sparked a similar controversy, and PETA responded. posting a video on your TikTok account.
“We are not 'okay' with this irresponsible act. [Bad Bunny] why did you think it was a good idea to expose a horse to the noise, lights, smoke, and screams of thousands of people? The horse looks stressed and clearly DOESN'T WANT TO BE THERE. Please don't include animals in your shows. They want to live in peace, not be used for your spectacle.”
The artist's team did not respond to PETA's complaints about his use of live animals on either occasion.
These allegations don't seem to have a negative impact on the success of the artist's residency in Puerto Rico. The residency has produced a series of performances that have generated interest and excitement on social media. It celebrates Bad Bunny's most recent album: "Debí Tirar Más Fotos," a multi-genre collection of songs that celebrate the singer's Puerto Rican identity.
