Argentine President Javier Milei embarked on his trip to New York this Monday with a busy diplomatic agenda surrounding his participation in the United Nations General Assembly. The president departed late last night (8:30 p.m. local time) accompanied by a delegation that included his sister Karina Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein, and Communications Secretary Manuel Adorni.

What is Milei's mission in the US?

The central focus of the mission will be to secure international financial support at a time of high economic vulnerability. Milei seeks support from the United States government, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other global actors to stem capital flight, stabilize the exchange rate, strengthen reserves, and meet debt obligations.

Important bilateral meetings are on her agenda. On Tuesday, Milei is scheduled to meet directly with Donald Trump. Some reports indicate that conditions for economic aid, financial assistance, and the definition of foreign exchange and reserve agreements will be negotiated.

He will also meet with Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF, whom he describes as a key figure given their ideological affinities and her ability to influence global economic policies.

Another highlight of the tour will be the bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, scheduled for Thursday in New York, as part of Milei's effort to consolidate international alliances with the United States and Israel.

At the UN General Assembly, Milei will also address the plenary to present her vision of global challenges, presumably with an emphasis on economic freedom, the fight against what she calls the "ideological agenda," and the role of the state versus the market. She will also participate in parallel events of geopolitical and economic importance, such as the presentation of the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award, which will be presented to her by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
