The American network ABC announced the indefinite suspension of the nightly program Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the controversy generated by its host's comments about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In one of his recent monologues, Kimmel criticized what he considered the "hypocritical" attitude of figures in the MAGA movement, accusing them of publicly distancing themselves from the suspect in the crime while, he claimed, seeking political gain from the case. The comments were described as "offensive and insensitive" by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, who even warned of possible regulatory action against the network.

The reaction was immediate. Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest owners of ABC-affiliated stations, pulled the show from its schedule, claiming that Kimmel's comments "do not represent the values of our local communities." The Sinclair Broadcast Group echoed this decision, demanding that the comedian apologize to Kirk's family.

Supporters and detractors of suspension

However, the measure has sparked a heated debate about freedom of expression in the American media. Hollywood figures such as Ben Stiller, Wanda Sykes, and Kathy Griffin expressed their support for Kimmel, denouncing the suspension as an act of censorship. On the political front, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic senators such as Chuck Schumer and Cory Booker also defended the host, insisting that political satire must be protected.

In contrast, President Donald Trump publicly celebrated ABC's decision, calling Kimmel a "zero talent" and applauding the network's "courage."

The controversy not only jeopardizes the future of the show Kimmel has hosted since 2003, but also reopens a fundamental debate: where does the line lie between the right to satire and the social responsibility of the media?
