First Lady Melania Trump announced an ambitious educational program called the Presidential AI Challenge. In a video released by the White House, she invited students and teachers from 4 to 18 years old to develop projects that use artificial intelligence technologies to address real-world problems in their communities.

In his own words:

“The Presidential AI Challenge invites all American students to unleash their imaginations and showcase the spirit of American innovation.”.
"Just as America once led the world into the skies, we are poised to lead again. This time, in the age of AI."

How does it work?

  • Participants: Students from preschool to 12th grade, along with their teachers or adult mentors, individually or in teams.
  • Registrations: Registration is now open (via AI.gov) and projects must be submitted by January 2026.
  • Stages of the competition: There will be state and regional competitions in the spring, culminating in a national final in Washington, DC.
  • Recognitions: The featured projects will receive $10,000, presidential certificates, cloud credits, and other technological resources.

Purpose of the Trump Administration

The initiative is part of the Trump administration's strategy to consolidate US leadership in technological innovation, especially against China. Melania Trump has previously integrated technology into her public role, highlighting the AI-powered narration of her audiobook and her advocacy for online safety through the "Take It Down Act," a law that combats the use of deepfakes and non-consensual intimate images.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology, emphasized that the goal is for young Americans to be “connected, actively engaged, and using AI tools” in their future lives.
