In an urgent summit at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met today with U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by prominent European leaders. The objective: to design a roadmap to end the conflict with Russia and guarantee Ukraine's security.
A new tone in diplomacy
The meeting began with a change of tone compared to their last tense meeting in February, when a public confrontation shook bilateral relations. This time, Trump adopted a more conciliatory stance and expressed optimism about moving toward a definitive solution to the conflict, abandoning the concept of a simple ceasefire, which he described as "unnecessary."
Zelensky, for his part, reaffirmed his outright rejection of any territorial concessions and stressed that any agreement must be accompanied by solid security guarantees, including ground, air, and sea protection.
Trump announced that the US would provide Ukraine with "very good protection," though he declined to specify whether this would entail commitments similar to NATO's Article 5. The proposal for NATO-style security guarantees has raised questions due to past failures.
Europe supports, but with conditions
Present at the summit were leaders such as Emmanuel Macron (France) and Keir Starmer (United Kingdom) who supported Ukraine. Starmer even suggested deploying British troops to Ukraine once a multilateral security agreement is reached.
The diplomatic climate was shaken by a series of deadly Russian attacks, particularly in Kharkiv and Zaporizhia, which Zelensky described as “cynical” attacks aimed at sabotaging the negotiations.
Trilateral table: Zelensky, Trump with Putin
During the meeting, Trump revealed his intention to begin talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the summit. The hope: a future trilateral meeting to work toward a peace agreement.
