Renowned Palestinian journalist Anas al-Sharif, a correspondent for the Qatari network Al Jazeera, was killed Sunday night in a precision Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, along with five other reporters, according to Israeli military sources and journalists in the enclave.

Accusations and lack of verifiable evidence

The Israeli military claimed that Al Sharif "was posing as a journalist" and was in fact a "terrorist" linked to Hamas, a charge for which it presented documents whose authenticity has not been verified.

He Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) warned last month about the smear campaign against the reporter and expressed concern for his safety.

Last words before the bombing

Al Sharif had posted a video on the social network X showing the intensity of the bombing.

The attack hit a journalists' tent located near Al Shifa Hospital. It was there that he delivered his farewell address:

The other victims of Al Jazeera and Sahat

Gazan authorities identified the other victims as:

  • Mohammed Qreiquea (also of Al Jazeera),
  • Photographers Ibrahim Zaher and Mohamed Aliwa
  • Photojournalist assistant Mohamed Nofala
  • Mohamed Al Khalidi, from the Palestinian media outlet Sahat.

Later images showed the brutality of the attack and the transfer of the bodies amidst religious chants.

Journalists' death toll

With these deaths, the Gaza government's tally of media personnel killed since the start of the offensive rises to 238, including journalists, influencers, and content creators.

The Gaza government called the incident a "brutal crime" and a "targeted killing" aimed at silencing critical voices and called on the UN Security Council and media organizations to condemn the attack.

Al Jazeera is one of the few international media outlets with a presence in the enclave, even Israel has banned it from broadcasting on its territory.

According to military sources, the Israeli offensive is targeting Hamas's "last strongholds" in Gaza City, in an operation that could result in the forced displacement of more than a million people.
