The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate severely. In just 24 hours, the agency AP News reported that at least 91 Palestinians were killed and more than 600 injured while trying to access food aid, according to a report from the Gaza Ministry of Health. The most tragic incident occurred at the Zikim crossing, where 54 people died while waiting for food. The numbers could rise, as many were transferred to remote hospitals that have not yet reported their data.
The Israeli military claims the crowd surrounded aid trucks and only fired warning shots. They attribute the violence to conflicts among Palestinians themselves. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Israel on Thursday to discuss a possible ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis. His visit coincides with new US sanctions against Palestinian Authority officials.
Since the start of the war following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, according to figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health, supported by international organizations. Fifty Israeli hostages remain, including about 20 confirmed to be alive.
Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem this week demanding an end to the war. Under international pressure, Israel allowed the entry of 270 aid trucks and carried out airdrops, although humanitarian organizations insist that at least 500 trucks are needed daily.
The international community, including long-standing allies like Germany, has increased its criticism of Israel's actions. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is also traveling to the region this week, reaffirming that a two-state solution is essential and that "the process must begin now."
