The 77th annual Emmy Awards are underway and will take place on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The television industry is already working on the details of the broadcast, which will be live on CBS and Paramount+.

The gala will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, who promises a relaxed and humorous tone for a highly anticipated evening.

The sci-fi thriller series "Severance" (Apple TV+) leads the list with 27 nominations, solidifying its position as the favorite in the drama categories. It's closely followed by "The Penguin," a dark adaptation of the Batman universe, with 24 nominations.

In the comedy category, “The Studio,” also from Apple TV+, made history by earning 23 nominations, matching the number achieved by the hit “The Bear.” Other favorites include “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” and “Only Murders in the Building.”

Key dates and process

The eligibility period for this year's Emmy Awards ran from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025. Voting to determine the nominees took place in April, and the results were announced on July 3. The Emmy Awards will recognize the most outstanding productions of the past year in more than 100 categories, including technical, artistic, and acting awards.

Streaming sets the tone

Once again, streaming platforms like Apple TV+, Netflix, and HBO Max dominate the landscape, reflecting the definitive shift in television viewing habits. Traditional networks, while present, have lost ground to high-quality original productions offered by digital services.

The 2025 ceremony will not only celebrate the best of television, but will also mark a year of significant renewal for the Emmys, which are committed to more inclusive and streamlined formats and more global coverage. The gala promises live performances, tributes to legends of the small screen, and, of course, some surprises.
