On Friday, July 4, flash flooding on the Guadalupe River in Texas killed more than 80 people. Among the victims were 27 campers and supervisors. Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for young girls in the Texas Hill Country. 

The flooding affected several homes built near the Guadalupe River. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Sunday night that 41 people were still missing across the state. The governor warned that this number could grow. 

Monday morning, Camp Mystic announced that 10 girls are still missing.

The effort to find the victims and survivors continues today, Monday. This operation has involved several organizations and volunteer groups, including several family members of the missing, who were allowed to join the search on Sunday morning.

The Texas Hill Country, one of the areas hardest hit by the flooding, is the center of operations for several summer camps. Search authorities have found 75 dead in this area, including 27 children.   

The operators of Camp Mystic They explained that on Friday the 4th at night, A “wall of water” swept away the cabins and tents that were located on the banks of the Guadalupe River. The camp shared the following message with AP NEWS: 

“We have been in communication with local and state authorities, who are deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls.

Flood Warningsones

The National Meteorological Service warned that there was a potential for flooding Thursday night. The following morning, they issued a series of flash flood warnings, clearly indicating imminent danger.

The flood occurred as a result of a deluge that brought the equivalent of months of rain in a single moment.  

Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice, one of the affected cities, pledged to investigate the response of emergency teams and agencies. 

Responses to the Tragedy 

President Trump announced he will visit Texas "most likely on Friday." The president declined to discuss whether this tragedy will affect his mission to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Pope Leo offered his condolences to the victims of the floods this Sunday.
