With a selection like Hugo Gonzalez, the Boston Celtics made key moves during the 2025 NBA Draft to prepare for a challenging season. With star Jayson Tatum recovering from an injury and the team facing salary cap constraints, the Celtics opted to add young talent to strengthen their future.

First Selection: Hugo Gonzalez (28th Overall)

The Celtics selected Hugo Gonzalez, a 19-year-old from Spain, with the 28th pick in the first round. Gonzalez is known for his defensive prowess and his nearly 7-foot-1 wingspan, which helps him block shots and defend opponents effectively.

Although he still needs to develop his skills, Gonzalez has been playing for Real Madrid in the Euroleague, one of Europe's most prestigious teams. Many experts consider him one of the best "surprises" of the draft and a great choice for Boston.

Second Round: Amari Williams (46th Overall)

The Celtics initially had the 32nd pick, but traded it to the Orlando Magic in exchange for two later picks (46th and 57th) and future picks in the 2026 and 2027 drafts.

With the 46th pick, Boston selected Amari Williams, a 7-foot-10 center from the University of Kentucky. Williams excels at defense and has been named Defensive Player of the Year in his college conference.

This selection is important, as the Celtics lost Luke Kornet to the San Antonio Spurs, and veteran Al Horford is a free agent. When he plays, Williams will bring size and a defensive presence near the rim, something the team needs.

Selection 57: Max Shulga

With the 57th pick, the Celtics selected Max Shulga, a 6'1" guard from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Shulga is expected to develop steadily and will likely sign a two-way contract, allowing him to alternate between the Celtics' first team and the development league.

He has the potential to be an important player in the future, although, as with most young players, he will need time to mature before becoming a regular on the team.

Exchanges and Future Plans

The trade with Orlando gave the Celtics future draft picks in the 2026 and 2027 seasons, demonstrating that the team is thinking not only about next season but also about its long-term success.

The team currently lacks experienced players at center, with only Amari Williams and Neemias Queta remaining as guaranteed big men on the roster. The Celtics have made it clear that re-signing veteran Al Horford is a priority, although teams like the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors are also reportedly interested in him.

Additionally, there are rumors that players like Anfernee Simons and Sam Hauser could be included in future trades, which would increase the pressure on the young newcomers.

With the additions of Hugo González, Amari Williams, and Max Shulga, the Celtics are investing in youth, defense, and long-term development. While next season may be a transitional one, Boston continues to work to build a competitive team for the future.
