Harvard University has received a stern warning from the Donald Trump administration. According to official sources, a federal investigation determined that the institution failed to adequately protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment, a violation of their civil rights.

U.S. government lawyers concluded that Harvard was fully aware that these students felt threatened, but reacted with “deliberate indifference.” Among the reported incidents are physical assaults, anti-Semitic graffiti, and Nazi symbols on university premises.

The Trump administration has warned Harvard that if it does not modify its protocols on antisemitism and inclusion, it will lose access to all federal funding. “Failure to implement appropriate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources,” reads a letter sent to the university’s interim president, Alan Garber.

The sum at stake amounts to more than $2 billion, and there is already a legal precedent: Harvard has sued the Executive Branch for violating the First Amendment and due process, denouncing an unprecedented political interference in university autonomy.

A new chapter in a troubled relationship

This isn't the first time the Trump administration and Harvard have clashed head-on. Earlier this year, the administration attempted to impose direct oversight over the university's admissions and hiring processes, prompting a legal response from the institution.

For its part, Harvard published an internal report in April acknowledging an increase in acts of antisemitism and anti-Muslim bias on its campus since October 7, pledging to take corrective action.

Another case on the list

Harvard isn't the only institution under scrutiny. In May, Columbia University was also formally notified by the government following allegations that it failed to adequately protect Jewish students during protests over the conflict in Gaza. These actions reflect a broader federal strategy targeting universities deemed lenient in the face of incidents of antisemitism.
