The United States Senate met on Monday, the 30th, to continue voting on the most important piece of legislation on President Trump's political agenda: the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." This Senate session continues a contentious legal process that has unfolded throughout the weekend.

The “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is a bill that embodies the current presidency’s core ambitions: it is a crucial piece of legislation to advance the Republican policy vision in several areas. Last month, the House of Representatives passed the bill in a narrow vote that generated contentious reactions from both ends of the political spectrum. Now, senators are working to add amendments to the bill, seeking a compromise that will allow them to fulfill their mission of passing the bill before July 4.

How are Laws Born? The House of Representatives and the Senate

In the United States, laws are established through a process involving two bodies of political officials: the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Laws begin as bills proposed in either body, but bills are usually introduced in the House of Representatives.

When a bill is introduced to the House of Representatives, members have the opportunity to propose amendments to adjust various aspects of the bill. When enough amendments have been passed, the House of Representatives votes to approve the bill. If the vote is successful, the bill is presented to the other official body, usually the United States Senate. The process is repeated again, and if the bill is approved by both congregations, it is presented to the president, who can reject it or sign it. When the president signs a bill, it becomes law.

The Law of a Big and Beautiful Proposal

The bill that has caused so much controversy in recent months contains several provisions that would implement measures highly attractive to the Republican agenda. This bill adds billions of dollars in funding to national defense, particularly strengthening the border and the capabilities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This bill also maintains the tax cuts for upper-class individuals that Trump established during his first presidency in 2017. These cuts were supposed to expire at the end of this year, but the president's bill will make them permanent.

To finance these measures, the bill reduces the benefits and accessibility of federal nutrition and health programs like Medicaid by billions of dollars. The Congressional Budget Office estimated Sunday that the legislation would increase the national deficit by nearly $3.3 billion over the next ten years.

The Senate will continue proposing amendments and voting to approve or reject this bill throughout this week.
