Faced with fear and family separation, the Latino community is organizing to reject the presence of ICE and defend their rights. Two marches are scheduled for the second week of June.
The organization Latinos Unidos en Massachusetts (LUMA) announced the holding of two marches scheduled for June 10 and 14, in defense of the rights of the immigrant community. This call comes after a press release In which LUMA details a meeting held with Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria and several local small business owners, where growing concerns about the presence of ICE in the city and recent arrests of immigrants with allegedly no criminal record were addressed.
During the meeting, LUMA highlighted the negative impact these actions have had on the community, such as widespread fear, family separation, and the economic consequences that directly affect restaurants and family businesses. The organization maintains that these situations violate the rights and well-being of hundreds of working families.
Given this context, LUMA asked the municipal government to collaborate in the design of a comprehensive support plan. In addition to marches as a public expression of rejection, they propose concrete measures that recognize the essential role of immigrants in the local economy and help mitigate the trauma caused by immigration operations.
Activists call for mobilization:
To raise awareness of this issue, the organizations are calling on the community to peacefully protest in defense of human rights and rejection of institutional violence. Two marches have been scheduled:
Monday, June 10, 5:00 pm – North Common Street Park, Lynn
Friday, June 14, 11:00 a.m. – Glendale Park, Everett
Various posters were spread through social networks as part of an awareness campaign and call to action, inviting the community to participate in peaceful protests. With messages like “Bring your family and friends, with a sign and your message.”. Other posters emphasize the demand for respect, equality and dignity for all, with phrases like“Let's fight for our rights”, “No to racism” and “No more attacks on our working people”.
Peaceful Protest in Lynn Common
One of the most forceful calls is the campaign “A week without immigrants”,which proposes not shopping, not working, or not attending school for a week, as a way to highlight the fundamental role immigrants play in the economic and social life of Massachusetts. The protest, called by LUMA, seeks not only to denounce mistreatment and discrimination, but also to strengthen solidarity among Latinos and other affected communities.
