The Boston Bruins have announced the extension of their general manager, Don Sweeney, through the 2027-28 season. In a press release, the team expressed confidence in Sweeney's vision and direction, despite having endured one of the most difficult seasons in recent franchise history.

Sweeney's leadership

Since being named general manager in 2015, Don Sweeney has led significant transformations in the Bruins organization, including the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019 and an NHL-record 135-point season in 2023, albeit without a championship. The franchise last won the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Last season, the Bruins missed the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, raising questions about the team's direction after several frustrating moments. Sweeney's strategic decisions included trades of key players like longtime captain Brad Marchand and Massachusetts native Charlie Coyle.

Coach Search and Team Restructuring

One of the Bruins' top priorities is hiring a permanent head coach. Jim Montgomery was fired early in the season and later hired by the St. Louis Blues, who advanced to the first round of the playoffs. Interim coach Joe Sacco posted a 25–30–7 record and is a candidate for the head coach position.

Don Sweeney has confirmed that the final decision on the coaching staff will be made before the 2025 NHL Draft, which will be held in June. By failing to make the playoffs, the Bruins earned the seventh overall pick in the draft, their highest selection since 2010.

Despite a disappointing season, key players like goalie Jeremy Swayman and forward David Pastrnak have expressed their commitment to the team's improvement and their optimism for the future. With increased salary cap space thanks to in-season trades, the Bruins are well positioned to sign free agents as they prepare for a rebuilding phase.
