Joe Biden, the former president of the United States, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Biden, who is 82 years old, was diagnosed on Friday, May 16, after experiencing "urinary symptoms" that led him to undergo a urological examination.
On Sunday, May 18, the office of the former president announced his diagnosis, explaining that Biden suffers from an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that has “spread to his bones.” However, Biden’s office also shared an upbeat message, explaining that the cancer is sensitive to hormone therapy and that the former president “will explore treatment options.”
Biden shared the following message through the platform X this morning: “Cancer touches us all. Jill and I, like many of you, learned that strength is born precisely in our broken parts. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
Joe Biden: Not just a battle with prostate cancer.
Until Donald Trump's inauguration, Joe Biden was the oldest president in US history. Biden's physical and mental health were intensely discussed in various quarters during the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections. This prostate cancer diagnosis has raised concerns in political circles, as it confirms that Joe Biden's health would have posed a significant obstacle had he sought reelection instead of ceding the nomination to Kamala Harris.
President Trump responded to Biden's diagnosis with the following message via Truth Social: “Melania and I are saddened to hear of Joe Biden’s recent diagnosis. We extend our best wishes to Jill and the rest of the family, and we wish Joe a speedy recovery.”
Former President Barack Obama also responded to Biden's diagnosis through X. Biden had previously served as Obama's vice president during his administration from 2008 to 2016. Obama wrote: “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. No one has done more to find innovative treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am confident he will rise to this challenge with his iconic grace and perseverance. We pray for his speedy recovery.”
One of Joe Biden's sons, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. Biden's presidency saw a major emphasis on administering cancer research programs. The former president remains optimistic while exploring treatment options.
