Tragedy at Jet Set Nightclub: Lawrence MA Mourns the Loss of His Dominican Community

The tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has had a devastating impact on the Dominican community in Lawrence, Massachusetts. More than half of Lawrence residents have ties to the Dominican Republic, and many have lost family and friends in this tragic event.

The collapse of the Jet Set nightclub 

On April 8, 2025, the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a concert by the renowned merengue singer Rubby PérezThe incident left at least 226 people dead and more than 260 injured, making it one of the worst tragedies in the recent history of the Dominican Republic.

Jet Set Tragedy Impacts Lawrence Community 

The tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub has caused many deaths and injuries. Among the victims was Fray Luis Rosario, owner of the club. Terra Luna Café in Lawrence, who was remembered for his dedication to his work and his love for the community. Local broadcaster Santiago Matías expressed his grief over the loss of his sister, Florinda Rojas, who was at the nightclub at the time of the collapse.  

Lawrence Mourns the Loss of His Dominican Community

Additionally, Lawrence resident Gustavo Suero was seen on video inside the club moments before the collapse. Gustavo Suero is one of more than 200 people killed when the ceiling suddenly collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub. Lawrence mourns the loss of his Dominican community in Santo Domingo. Suero's family says video confirms he was in the club at the time. A neighbor says he was kind and sociable, and is devastated by the news.

Community and authorities response

The Lawrence community has responded with solidarity, organizing a vigil in the plaza next to City Hall to honor the victims. Mayor Brian DePena participated in the ceremony, raising the Dominican flag as a symbol of hope and unity.
