The World Figure Skating Championships arrive in Boston at a bittersweet time for Efimova and Mitrofanov. A Community Devastated by Tragedy

The accident, which claimed 67 lives, took place two young skatersSpencer Lane and Jinna Han, along with two coaches, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, and two parents from the Skating Club of Boston. Mitrofanov, a Texas native and a club member for five years, remembers the youngsters as talented “superstars,” while describing the deceased coaches as exceptional figures who treated their students like family. For him, the club was a home, and the loss has left an indelible void.

Efimova, who arrived from Finland in 2023 to join Mitrofanov as a skating partner, shares that sentiment. Both have worked to support their community, organizing tributes and participating in charity events while facing the challenge of continuing their training.

Preparing for the World Figure Skating Championships

Despite the emotional blow, the pair returned to the ice just two days after the accident. Mitrofanov explains that staying in motion was essential to maintain the synchronization required for pair skating. The World Figure Skating Championships, which begin on March 25th, represents an opportunity to channel their grief into something positive. Each practice and perfected jump gives them the strength to keep going and support the affected families. The small achievements during training have given them the energy they need to face this difficult time.

A Tribute on Ice

The World Figure Skating Championships will be held at the TD Garden from March 25-30, 2025, and will include a tribute to the victims on Wednesday, March 26, at 6:15 p.m. Efimova and Mitrofanov will compete in the pairs short program and, if they qualify, in the free skate. Their goal is not only to excel at the World Figure Skating Championships, but also to pay tribute to their fallen teammates, bringing their legacy to the global stage.
